The 23rd thing

So here it is; the final post.
I am glad I have taken part in this learning experience, despite occasional difficulties.
I have learnt about tools I had never used or was not aware existed.
I intend to complete the survey later today and then my Learning 2.0 is over.

Library 2.0 and Web 2.0

It is interesting to see a number of individuals' point of views on Library 2.0 and Web 2.0.
I agreed with Michael Stephens when he says that "techno-worship" and "technology for the sake of technology" should be avoided. Trend spotting is also a positive aspect of Library 2.0.
Viewing so many opinions also promts me to consider my own.

Technorati

I actually find the Technorati pages aesthetically uninspiring.
Perhaps I am just an advert junkie but at least colourful ads create an interesting contrast to the rest of the officially published web page.
I suppose I really am guilty of judging a book by its cover!
In Technorati, I like the options to view blogs, posts, photos and videos from your search.

Tagging

I can see the benefits in having bookmarks "that can be accessed from anywhere". However, being a not so big internet fan, I know almost all of my more notable sites off by heart. With few sites to watch, I find my home page and now my bloglines account are enough for me to manage at this time.

Technology

I really enjoy digital cameras but I still cling to my first, and only, film camera from my childhood. I miss that long wait for your photos. However, the ease at which I, my parents and my grandparents can share photos from across the ditch and beyond far out ways my sentimentality.

Podcasts

I always feel a little weird to just hear someone speaking without any kind of visual link.
Nevertheless, I have subscribed to an evolution podcast from http://www.drzach.net/podcast.htm and am currently listening to "Why do men have nipples?".
I found Podcast Alley an easier site to navigate as there were genres you could choose to skip to.
I think I could continue to use podcasts as a tool to extend my personal knowledge.

Web 2.0

I am impressed I am acquantied to a number of award winners; YouTube (first place-video), Bebo (third place-social networking), Rollyo (second place-search), Flicker (first place-photos and images), Zoho (second place organization), Bloglines (second place-news and blogs), Wikispaces (third place-hosted wiki) and of course Google (which has about five in different catagories).

So I headed for the Fun Stuff and tried out HairMixer; http://www.hairmixer.com/ This is a site where you choose one photo to take the hair from and another for the face. Download a picture or there are galleries available to choose celebrity photos from.

Zoho

So I created a Zoho account this week. As a test document I edited in a short list of the 23 things, highlighting what I have already accomplished. The icons and buttons are, thankfully, familiar so easy enough to locate and use. Also, the tabs along the top of the page makes flicking between documents really simple.

Sandbox

I had a lot of fun considering my favourite books, music, numbers and television programmes.
I found it easy enough to flick make and forth between editing and viewing the pages.
It is interesting the numbers that people do and do not like for whatever particular reason.

Just a quote of the moment, regarding a 'Brideshead Revisited' movie: "Mr. Goode shows all the charisma of a stalk of boiled asparagus molded into the likeness of Jeremy Irons."

Wikis

I remember using a wiki system through wikispaces for last year's biology with individuals researching and displaying different elements of a topic. This caused a 'students teaching students' networking effect.
These can be useful functions when needed for a particular subject (like the organisation of the camping trip in the demonstration video).

Flicker fun

I quite liked the colour searching options on flicker. The mosaic function is kind of funky too but not something I feel I am likely to ever use again.

Some of the trading cards I saw were really interesting. So I spent a little extra time and created my own trading card.

Rollyo

I have not had a lot of luck dealing with the rollyo site.
However, I have finally added a rollyo search bar to my blog. Though it did take a excruciatingly long time.
For now, I am happy with my googing since I prefer the web, map and image search options.

Thing 17

I have had a Bebo account for the past 3ish years so I am familiar with the concept of social networking. I have mostly used my own space to display photos where other people in them can see. However, the number of groups and band profiles available through Bebo is astonishing and there are all sorts of applications to add into your profile. The best of these are the quizzes, poles and white board.

YouTube

I am fairly used to YouTube and occasionally use it to find visual study material. In previous years I have found everything from chemistry demonstrations to ad parodies and then of course there are all the mentos and coke videos! I've found it is handy having the suggestions that appear on the drop down search list.

Here is a video I have found along the way. This song goes around and around my head!
The kitty cat dance. (From http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8hOqsVAgwI)

RSS

I appreciate being able to identify additions to sites I rarely visit through bloglines.
However, I find the bloglines pages frustratingly sterile. I've always really enjoyed combing through the colourful pages for anything that strikes my interest.
Anyway, I have subscribed to some "new books" lists, web magazines, and cartoons and sign into bloglines occasionally to update myself.

LibraryThing

I'm not too sure if LibraryThing really helps me. All my notable books are on my bookshelves in reality so not sure I need them virtually. Anyway, I found a few of my favourites.
Though, I was quite surprised that "Bloodtide"-Melvin Burgess, one of my very top books, has only 100ish fans.

So here is the beginnings on my personal online library:

Flicker

After some time spent searching through flicker I came across this "extremely rare colourful zebra" from http://www.flickr.com/photos/bestrated1/2037077881/.
Some of the tags people use though seem a little irrelevant.

Generators!

Since wandering through The Generator Blog (http://generatorblog.blogspot.com/), I've selecting a few of my favourite generators.

Number one has to be CSI plot generator (http://csi.hnldesign.nl/) which churns out summerized, mock CSI plots. Such as:

A bouncer in a basement is brutally murdered by a catholic priest, using an acid-filled watergun. The victim was found drifting in a river. After some extensive shots of David Caruso putting his sunglasses on and off, the perp is arrested and tried. The vic and the perp were both completely insane.

A nun, on her day off, is brutally murdered by an army officer, using an ice pick, on the roof of a desert motel. After extensive, flashy and up-beat laboratory tests on random pieces of evidence, the perp is caught. The vic and the perp used to be married.

A butterfly collector is killed by a fundamental buddhist, using a paint roller, at a Bar Mitzvah. After a spectacular car chase scene, the perp is caught. The vic and the perp apparently dated the same man.

Funnily enough, they actually sound like the programme.

I also played around with a magnigraph generator (http://www.magnigraph.com/) and here is one of my creations.

ebooks

Ahhh! A useful find from www.gutenberg.org; Charles Darwin "On the Origin of Species" ebook. A book I've always thought about reading and never quite gotten around to.
Evolution is something of a new obsession for me and, as a bonus, this information and background reading now could boost my knowledge for the upcoming biology exam...!!!
Feeling a lot more confident this week since I've made a more substantial decision about next year than "ummm.. go to Uni, I guess?"!

Fun with countdowns

I've been having fun with 'tickers' through tickerfactory.com. So now counting down to my birthday!!!

Here goes....

Before I properly began I wish to make it quite clear that I am NOT a blogger.
My lonely, old laptop spends the majority of its time ignored, on my floor.
I must admit I have used it a lot more recently since I started planning and researching for next year; first year Uni.
Hopefully, I'll find a little more time in my week for funfun blogging after I've completed the rest of my applications.
Good luck to me!
